Fuel Cards

Full transparency, I get a $400 kickback from everyone that signs up for Coast Fuel using by link. With that being said, I was recommending these guys even before they signed me up for affiliate marketing and we actively use these cards in our fleet.

We used Wex in the beginning and their billing was rough, they didn’t have much data or reporting for us, and setting up new cards and cancelling old ones was a pain.

We then switched all of our employees to Chase Credit cards and put a $500 limit on each card. This worked but there aren’t many other spend controls and opened us up to a slight amount of risk. Also, again, the reporting wasn’t really there.

We jumped over to Coast because I had heard good things. We have been very impressed. They have a million different spend controls (including allowing or limiting the purchase of jet fuel). We can put in tank size for each vehicle, what grade of gas they are supposed to use, and it automatically makes each tech upload a receipt of every transaction. Transactions are flagged if anything is askew.

It also connects to our GPS system and won’t let the tech fuel up if the truck isn’t right there with them. All of this reduces fraud and gives me peace of mind.

Cards can’t be stolen and used by someone else unless the thief also stole the techs phone and memorized their license plate and also had the truck at the pump with them.

Additionally, they just dropped a report with industry benchmarks (click on that and the report should open). It looks like we are spending a bit more than the median pest control company and that means we have some areas to improve. To do this, I am going to have all of our techs download Coast’s efficiency app which shows all the gas prices around them and will help us save a few cents per gallon more. With a fleet of 15, these small costs are starting to really up.
